“Well?” Ryder asked.

“I don’t have time for it. I’m needed in the office.” She shoved the phone back to him. “Sorry.”

“You’re still wearing my collar.”

“Damn it. You tricked me.” She tugged at the chain. “Take it off.”

“I’ve done no such thing.” He toyed with the lock, opening the catch. The muscle in his jaw tensed. “I’m asking, not demanding.”

Fuck. She wanted to slug him. How could he do this to her? How could he dick with her, making her think he might actually want her when all he wanted was a playmate for the damn scene? She gritted her teeth. Her anger toward him evaporated a bit. She wanted to be on display under Ryder’s hand. He knew how to make her body sing. He’d made her comfortable. Which did she want? To risk being emotionally scarred by him or to walk away without giving him a chance?

“Well?” Ryder met her gaze. “I won’t work with anyone else.”

Christ. He had to keep pushing the right buttons within her. “What are you going to do then? If I say no? Quit? You work here—same as me. I can’t be your go-to girl.”

“So you’re dumping me?”

“I’m being cautious.” Dumping? We aren’t a couple yet.

“Then D was right. You’re pushing me away.” He laughed and shook his head. “I refused to believe him.”

She curled into herself and put more space between them. She hated to admit he was right—both men were. When anyone got too close, she stopped the situation. No one would hurt her again. But as much as she kept pushing, she wanted him to fight for her. If he thought keeping the relationship going was for the best, then he had to start acting like it.

Ryder sighed. “Got it.” He shoved his keys and phone into his pockets then met her gaze again. “When you’re ready to tell me what’s going on, I’m here.” He crossed the room, then stopped at the doorway. “I expect you to be here and ready for the demo. We’ll do this because we’ve been asked.” He tapped the door handle. “Oh, and I don’t give up easily. The others might have quit after one good shove, but I’m not them. I fight for who I want.”

He left her alone in the office. The door clicked and the silence deafened her. She sagged onto her chair. Well, shit. He’d pushed back. The other Masters hadn’t bothered. She touched the lock on the collar. He’d opened the catch but hadn’t removed the chain. The next move was hers, but the true test would be when she showed up for the scene tomorrow. If she chose to submit to him, then she owed him honesty. If she decided against playing with him, then she’d have to accept the consequences of her actions. Did she want to submit? To him?
